LA TIMES JUMPS ON

June 22, 2009

Nice little bump in the Sunday Calendar from the LA Times…

TEN FACES IGNITING MOVIE BUZZ

H.P. LOVECRAFT

H.P. Lovecraft’s writing lives on 72 years after his death. Universal and Imagine Entertainment plan to adapt “The Strange Adventures of H.P. Lovecraft,” a supernatural graphic novel from Image Comics that fictionalizes the author’s life story, and director Guillermo del Toro hopes to tap into his strange brew with a film version of “At the Mountains of Madness,” about an expedition to the Antarctic that uncovers massive and ancient mysteries.

BOOK 1 SOLD OUT?

April 8, 2009

fangoria.jpgIssue One of The Strange Adventures of HP Lovecraft was released this past wednesday and we’re hearing reports that it’s sold out all over town. Let us know if you’re having trouble finding the book. Email adam@lovecraftcomic.com to share your story.

Some early reviews have been particularly kind to us.

From MajorSpoilers.com:

“My first thought when I heard H’wood had picked up The Strange Adventures of H.P. Lovecraft to be turned into a motion picture even before the first issue had hit the stands was, “They’re going to make a movie of this?” Now, after finally getting my hands on the [comic, my] first thought is, “They’re going to make a movie of this!”

From IGN.com

“It’s a unique concept, and one with far more potential than your average Cthulu adaptation. It’s pleasing, then, to see Carter make such excellent use of it. Lovecraft #1 is a very well-written and surprisingly intimate look at a writer with crippling feelings of inadequacy.”

From LivingBetweenWednesdays.com:

“This is a damn good comic, folks. There’s plenty for a Lovecraft nerd like me to get all geeky about but it stands up on its own as well - I think that “tentacle monsters vs socially awkward writer in the Twenties” is a pretty universal plot by now, right? There hasn’t been too much creepy craziness yet but I’m certain that both the art and the writing are up to the task. And I’m pretty damn pleased that they didn’t go the easy route of making Lovecraft a gun-totin’ Teddy Roosevelt-esque he-man, as amusing as that might be. Save it for the Robert E Howard comic, guys! Highly recommended”

Here’s a nifty article appearing in Fangoria next month.

Universal, Imagine option LOVECRAFT

March 25, 2009

universal2.jpg
From Variety.com:

Universal and Imagine Entertainment are gearing up for “The Strange Adventures of H.P. Lovecraft.” The studio has bought the film rights to Image Comics’ graphic novel, with the project a potential directing vehicle for Ron Howard. The book bows April 8.

U sparked to “Lovecraft” because its take on classic horror fits in well with the studio’s library of monster fare featuring Dracula, Frankenstein, the Mummy and the Wolf Man, the last of which is being brought back to the bigscreen later this year.

Created by Mac Carter and Jeff Blitz, book borrows elements from Lovecraft’s life, such as his family’s struggle with mental illness and his own bouts with writer’s block, and transforms the young writer’s darkest nightmares into reality when he comes across a book that puts a curse on him and lets the evils he conjures up loose on the world.”

WOW. We are very humbled and excited about the news and can’t wait to share this book with you. It’s been a long, hard slog, nine years and counting to get this project to where it is today. We experienced some very dark days that even Lovecraft himself may have tipped his hat at. We only hope to honor Howard Phillips Lovecraft’s legacy, authorship and rabid fans by telling a good yarn.

More news as it develops.

May he eat you first!

AICN DIGS IT

August 22, 2008

From Ain’t it Cool News:

Later contributors to the Lovecraft “Cthulhu Mythos” would often include H.P. himself in their tales, either in oblique reference or as an outright character. Such is the case with THE STRANGE ADVENTURES OF H.P. LOVECRAFT, which, following a prologue depicting the death of Necronomicon author Abdul Alhazred, dives right in to Lovecraft’s world of the 1920s. There are some real details of Lovecraft’s life presented here–his two elderly aunts with whom he lived, the lackluster reaction his strange stories would receive from the pulp magazine publishers–and then there are the invented bits: a love triangle with a vivacious librarian and a wealthy bachelor, an encounter with the famed Necronomicon in a university library, and Lovecraft’s inevitable realization that the monsters he thought were fiction are all too real.

As I said, putting Lovecraft in the middle of his stories is nothing new, and it’s a shame that Vertigo published the similarly-themed (thought more Freudian and psychosexual) LOVECRAFT hardcover only a few years ago—the comparison between these two works will be inevitable, although it seems as if Carter is going for more of a “men’s adventure magazine” feel with this series rather than anything so cerebral. Despite the familiar set-up, I really liked this book—Salmons’ loose, somewhat scratchy artwork reminds me alternately of Matt Wagner and Teddy Kristiansen, and fits perfectly with the slow-building tension and sense of horror that Carter builds up through this issue. Byrne’s color palette adds the final touches of gloom to the Providence streets, as well as the horror that is only beginning to emerge through Lovecraft’s mind.

I picked up this comic from the creators’ booth at the San Diego Comic-Con—we chatted a few minutes about Lovecraft (what else?)—but I have yet to see it on the stands at any comic shop. Hopefully this title will be published in wider circulation before long—we Lovecraft junkies like to feed our monkeys as often as we can, and THE STRANGE ADVENTURES OF H.P. LOVECRAFT is good food indeed.

SDCC 2008

July 15, 2008

HP Lovecraft CoverWe’re off to the San Diego Comic-Con!

Look for us in booth #833, hidden somewhat in Hall A but lucky to be part of the festivities.

All four issues of the comic are finished, but you already know that.Negotiations with our publisher are ongoing. In one form or another, we expect The Strange Adventures of HP Lovecraft to be out before the end of the year. But to get your fix, we’ll be selling a 40 page, full color Limited Edition (hastily printing in China as I write). We call it CHAPTER 1: ABOUT A WRITER AND HIS BOOK.

Like before, we’ll have some cool posters for you as well.  Also be on the lookout for Frank Wyrd’s documentary about H.P. titled  Lovecraft: Fear of the Unknown. It’s premiering at SDCC 2008 and features some of our artwork.

Hope you’ll stop by and check in with us. We’re looking forward to seeing you all there.

May he eat you first.

THE LAST PAGE

February 26, 2008

Rejoice! Plans for the wrap party are officially underway.

As we reported at WonderCon this past weekend, artwork on the first arc of our long-running labor-of-love, The Strange Adventures of HP Lovecraft, is finished–a full 160 pages!

TONY’S LAST PAGE!

As I write, the Man–Tony Salmons–is putting his extraordinary, unrivaled talents to work spotting a few blacks and touching up his inks. Adam continues to color, letter, and work his cover magic in anticipation of releasing the first issue this summer. We’ve spoken with several publishers and we’re eager to get it into their hands for feedback.

We want to thank everyone who stopped by our booth so many times at all the various conventions, who’ve patiently checked-in with us, who have shown so much understanding in our process. As we’ve said all along, we wanted every page of the artwork on the book completed before publishing so there would be no delays from month to month in our publishing schedule during the first arc. That goal has been achieved. We can hardly wait to share it with all of you.

Thanks again,

Mac
